Large Scale Mobster Bust (Rhode Island)

The Rhode Island State Police announces the arrests of several individuals resulting from a year and a half long investigation conducted by members of the Rhode Island State Police Intelligence Unit, Massachusetts State Police and the Department of the Rhode Island Attorney General.

In September 2007, Detective Scot Baruti, who is assigned to the Intelligence Unit was contacted by a cooperating source who advised that a subject identified as Nicholas �Nicky� Pari was actively involved in operating and managing a large scale criminal operation based out of the Valley Street Flea Market located at 500 Valley Street, Providence, Rhode Island. Nicholas S. Pari, age 71, of 4 Eben Street, North Providence, Rhode Island is known to members of the Intelligence Unit due to his long-standing association with members of the Patriarca Organized Crime family and his criminal history which includes a Manslaughter conviction in 1979. Nicholas Pari and Andy Merola were convicted in their roles in the April 3, 1978 killing of Joseph �Joe Onions� Scanlon. The body of Scanlon was never recovered. On appeal, the Rhode Island Supreme Court later overturned the conviction. In 1982, Pari agreed to plea to a lesser charge of Manslaughter and received a seven-year prison sentence with thirteen years suspended.

Members of the Intelligence Unit enlisted a wide array of resources to successfully infiltrate Pari�s criminal operation to include the use of undercover detectives from the Rhode Island State Police and Massachusetts State Police, as well as the use of court-authorized wiretaps. Detectives and the cooperating source were able to make narcotics and firearms purchases from Pari and his associates. During many of these transactions, counterfeit trademarked handbags and sneakers were provided to Pari in exchange for the narcotics and firearms. Pari would often utilize his criminal partner, Lloyd Morse, age 50, of 46 Cliffdale Avenue, Cranston, RI to facilitate these illegal transactions on his behalf. In addition to selling narcotics and firearms, Pari and his associates were involved in a wide range of illegal activity to include fencing stolen goods, sale of stolen jewelry and setting up thefts of catalytic converters.

During the course of the investigation, a separate criminal operation was identified. This operation was being overseen by Gerald M. Tillinghast, age 62, of 33 High Meadow Court in Cranston, Rhode Island. Tillinghast is a well known organized crime associate and mob enforcer who was released from prison on January 17, 2007. Tillinghast served twenty-nine years at correctional facilities in Rhode Island, Florida and New Hampshire after being found guilty by a jury for the 1978 for the murder of George Basmajian. We allege that Tillinghast directed John R. Sousa, age 63, of 23 Golini Drive, Johnston, Rhode Island and Michael F. Borders, age 47, of 87 Victoria Avenue (2nd floor), Cranston, RI to conduct a narcotics distribution and illegal gambling operation. This operation was being run out of Dyer Discount, a second hand furniture and appliance store, formerly located at 492 Dyer Avenue in Cranston, Rhode Island. Once Dyer Discount went out of business and with Nicholas Pari�s failing health, Tillinghast, along with his criminal partners Sousa, and Borders moved their criminal operation to the Valley Street Flea Market.

On November 17, 2008, members of the State Police, Providence, Johnston, Cranston, Police and the FBI fanned out across several communities in Rhode Island executing court-authorized arrest and search warrants relating to the case. The following individuals have been arrested and will be arraigned at Sixth District Court in Providence later this afternoon on the listed criminal charges:

�Nicholas S. Pari, age 71, of 4 Eben Street, North Providence, RI Criminal Prohibited from Possessing Firearms (two counts) Unlawful Sale of a Concealable Weapon (two counts) License or Permit to Carry a Pistol (two counts) Delivery of a Controlled Substance to a Police Officer (four counts) Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (five counts) Carrying a Dangerous Weapon while Committing a Crime of Violence Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations

�Gerald M. Tillinghast, age 62, of 33 High Meadow Court, Cranston, RI Conspiracy to Deliver a Controlled Substance (five counts) Conspiracy to Commit Bookmaking Conspiracy to Commit Organized Criminal Gambling Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations

Narcotics and firearms were also seized this morning during the execution of these warrants. The investigation continues and we anticipate more charges and arrests. Several vehicles were also seized pending forfeiture proceedings relating to the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations statutes.

Does any one know the specifics of the eviction process (the physical process since I have lost my home of fifteen years to foreclosure and the court has been no help).

I have been given 48 hours notice to vacate follow a court decision against me and time is up tomorrow Friday the 14 at 11AM. I have been moving for the last three weeks and the rain hasnt help and now its critical to have some info that no one appears able or willing to divulge.

Does the constable show up on time? If I am still moving items will he stop me? The notice talks about taking items and putting them in storage for me at my expense. Can they remove them while I am still packing?

If I move items from the house itself and continue to pack from the yard can they stop me from doing so or insist I leave the premises? Is there any way to get themto allow some additional time?

The law office of the bank (who bought it at the foreclosure sale) tell me that only thier client (bank) can permit me to stay but refuse to let me speak with them.

Any help is appreciated I will check as I pack.

Italian Americans and Federal Hill is big Surprise of Film Festival
Crowd Votes Film 1st Place for Best Documentary

(Providence, Rhode Island, USA) The (2007) 11th Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) has named ITALIAN AMERICANS AND FEDERAL HILL 1st Place, Audience Choice Award winner for Best Documentary out of 2,491 entries submitted and 320 films screened during this year�s festival.

Produced and directed by Jonathan Raben, the film has received a four star rating from Providence Journal film critic, Michael Janusonis, a five star rating from Frances Syner (Federal Hill Gazette), �thumbs up� from the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF News) and heralded as far away as Italy by the Newsitalia Press. Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) Italy's National Broadcaster covered the film premier event and the Annotico Report featured the story worldwide.

Festival officials and workers did not expect a large turnout with so much prior exposure and the DVD release. The RIIFF�s award ceremony presentations also conflicted with the screening, however lines formed early for the film. Columbus Theater owner Jon Berberian, festival workers and officials expressed great surprise when Italian Americans and Federal Hill had hundreds more in attendance than expected and the biggest crowd of all films shown during the festival.

The film relates the history, traditions, challenges and successes of Italian immigrants throughout the United States. The hardships and prejudices they endured are similar to that of immigrants today who come with different cultures, traditions and languages.

The Audience Choice Award to be presented is named for the beloved late Viola M. Marshall who was an artist, arts supporter, and a founding member of the Flickers Arts Collaborative which created and produces the RIIFF.

Italian Americans and Federal Hill is the first film made entirely in Rhode Island by and with Rhode Islanders that has experienced commercial success. Associate producer and camera operator Max Votolato, editor, music production and camera operator John Gulino and camera operator Steve Indelicato all worked very hard to assist Mr. Raben in the award winning film. HELP! Blue Cross wants to exclude Women & Infants hospital

HELP by writing to the Rhode Island Department of Health against the Blue Cross proposed material modification to remove Women & Infants Hospital and the other Care New England organizations from its network.

What will be the consequences if the intended material modification form Blue Cross gets approved? Threat to health care access:

- Fear and confusion regarding access to care and ability to pay for it

- Commercial HMO and Medicare, Medicaid Managed Care � Anticipated there will be no coverage at CNE facilities, except for emergency services, high risk obstetrics, level III NICU services and In Vitro Fertilization. Going into labor to give birth is not deemed either urgent or emergent by Blue Cross. The result will be disruption of continuity of care and threatened access to needed health care.

For commercial non-HMO patients:

- Patients will be liable for the difference between what the hospital charges and what Blue Cross pays. Some will simply forego needed treatment. Some will attempt to seek care at other hospitals they would not otherwise have chosen. Some will come to CNE hospitals and incur significant financial obligations.

Proposed network inadequate, excess capacity in other hospitals does not exist

- W&I and Kent combined have approximately 80 percent of the births in Rhode Island or more than 10,000 births. There is not sufficient capacity in the other OB hospitals to absorb these displaced Blue Cross patients.

- The proposal calls for treatment of level II NICU patients at Charlton Hospital which only has 8 beds. Again, there is not sufficient capacity to deal with these distressed newborns. Additionally the plan does not acknowledge that the medical condition of these vulnerable babies can change precipitously, necessitating the immediate need for tertiary level services.

- Insufficient capacity in alternative provider sites to accommodate intensive treatment adult patients at Butler, involuntary patients or outpatients (Butler is one of the few sites at which Blue Cross subscribers can receive outpatient care).

Please, akt now and write to the RIDH to prevent a major health care crisis in Rhode Island.

Researchers from The Miriam Hospital and Brown Medical School in Providence, RI are looking for volunteers for a National Cancer Institute funded study entitled Healing Moves.

Healing Moves is looking at the role of physical activity in helping to regain quality of life after colorectal cancer treatment. Men and women, who are 18 years and older, and have completed their treatments are invited to participate. Healing Moves participants receive an easy personalized program and convenient telephone counseling support with a trained health educator. No weekly classes to attend!
